Among vs amid
二者都是说"被...环绕，处于...之中"，但是区别还是有的。
Among通常用以可数名词，而且是三个以上：
He spent a year living among monks at a temple.
Amid通常用以抽象的不可数的名词：
Her nervousness disappeared amid the excitement of the party.
此外，amid通常被认为是最礼貌、最正式的那些词。至于amidst, amongst, whilst等词，已经被认为是非常老旧的用法，通常被建议不要使用。

很多人认为这个习语的来源是这样。以前水手不得不去修理船上的绳索，需要把线手动缠绕上去，这是又累又花时间的工作。在绕绳子(spinning yarn)的时候，水手们自然而然就会和旁边的人闲聊，讲天马行空的故事。渐渐地，这些故事就被用yarn这个词指代了。
