China’s Growing Power Makes Its Youth Hawkish? Evidence from the Chinese Youth’s Attitudes toward the US and Japan

Changes in relative power between the rising and dominant state have been consistently recognized as a key contributor to international conflicts, as they can lead to convergence within both societies in threat perceptions of each other.

In the case of China, a dominant view assumes that China’s increased power leads to wide social support for nationalism, which unifies the Chinese threat perceptions of key rivals such as the US and Japan.

Based on a large-scaled survey among China’s elite youth, this study examines the relationship between their perception of China’s power asymmetry and threat with respect to the US and Japan.

The findings show that the dominant view has clearly overlooked the divergent voices within the youth, and they also challenge the common assumption that China’s growing power has fostered a generation of youth with unanimous support for more assertive Chinese foreign policy.
