True freedom of the soul cannot exist purely in opposition to something else — it has to be born from finding something we positively want to be. So perhaps a better question to ask ourselves than “how do you frame freedom for yourself?” is “what do you really want?”

Personally, I want to be a mom and have a family and a cat. I want to play in the world of ideas, make beautiful things, and tell stories that change peoples’ minds. I want a neighborhood of close friends to host dinners for and sense-make with. I want to feel proud of the slice of earth that I exist in and a sense of responsibility to leave it better than I found it.

Freedom in a purely rights-based sense alone will never grant a feeling of a life well-lived.
