2022-01-09 18:31:35 Wordle Is a Love Story

The word game has gone from dozens of players to hundreds of thousands in a few months. It was created by a software engineer in Brooklyn for his partner.

Josh Wardle, a software engineer in Brooklyn, knew his partner loved word games, so he created a guessing game for just the two of them. As a play on his last name, he named it Wordle.

“I think people kind of appreciate that there’s this thing online that’s just fun,” Mr. Wardle said in an interview on Monday. “It’s not trying to do anything shady with your data or your eyeballs. It’s just a game that’s fun.”

While other games send notifications to your phone hoping you’ll come back throughout the day, Wordle doesn’t want an intense relationship.

“It’s something that encourages you to spend three minutes a day,” he said. “And that’s it. Like, it doesn’t want any more of your time than that.”

If he were optimizing the game to gain as many players as possible, he would have included a link at the end of the tweet that the tool generates, he said. But after looking into it, he said it would have looked “trashy” and not as visually compelling, and he liked the grid’s mysterious air, which he felt piqued people’s interest.

2022-01-09 18:24:20 Long Covid: why do some people have symptoms months after infection?

A meta-analysis of studies by Penn State researchers found more than half of the 236m people who had Covid-19 when the paper was published — which has since risen to 275m — had symptoms lasting more than six months.

Long Covid is defined as suffering symptoms 12 weeks or more after diagnosis.

While patients suffer a range of symptoms, the most commonly reported are fatigue and breathing problems.

A great deal remains unknown. However, the PHOSP study provided an important clue that lends weight to a hypothesis that long Covid is caused by a continued immune reaction.

2022-01-09 18:22:38 Six books on China

China is an incredibly important topic, both in terms of its economic impact and its general importance to the world

Mostly, these books deal with two things: China’s hyper-capitalist economy and its pseudo-communist political system. They are not particularly up-to-date — some of them were written over a decade ago, and none of them is recent enough to cover the economic disruptions and international tensions that have confronted China over the past two years. But they’re useful nonetheless, because they provide helpful background to understand why those disruptions and tensions arose when they did.

Chinese authorities in Sichuan province are arresting Tibetan monks and beating them over suspicion that they informed outside people about the destruction of the 99-foot tall Buddha statue in the country’s Luhuo county (Drago), a media report said.

The Buddha statue in the Kardze (Ganzi) 甘孜 Tibetan Autonomous Region was demolished in December by officials who said the statue had been built too high, reported Radio Free Asia (RFA) citing Tibetan sources.

2022-01-09 18:18:21 The pandemic’s true death toll

How many people have died because of the covid-19 pandemic? The answer depends both on the data available, and on how you define “because”.

Although the official number of deaths caused by covid-19 is now , our single best estimate is that the actual toll is people. We find that there is a 95% chance that the true value lies between and additional deaths.
