Kingdom of Characters: The Historical Development Chinese Language Writing Media 漢語發展歷史寫作媒體《漢字王國》

“But in the Chinese context, literacy means something more than just knowing how to read and write. It has traditionally signaled many things: the mark of being steeped in the classics and wisdom of the ancients; a meditative craft through which to cultivate a higher self; an elite medium through which to express one’s inner character, thoughts, and emotions.”

Reading a historical, non-fictional work that is exceptionally well-written, absorbing, thoroughly researched, and flows organically through the pages is so gratifying. Jing Tsu’s latest book, Kingdom of Characters: The Language Revolution That Made China Modern, is all of that and more.

This book not only deepened our understanding of the evolution/transformation of the Chinese language during their most tumultuous times but helped shape our outlook on language as a whole, and the prominent role it plays in our lives.

What is foot binding/纏足?

There is a traditional culture in China, that is, Chinese women used to pass on bow shoes or what could be called foot binding. This tradition was created in the early 10th century by a dancer named Precious Thing.

At that time, women with smaller legs were considered attractive by husbands, and it helped women achieve a higher status. Therefore, in the 19th century, almost all Chinese women had their feet bound.

However, this tradition began to disappear after China's independence. Until now, Chinese women rarely bind their feet anymore.
