这是一个在写学术类书籍的时候常用的简写。cf. 后面加上某本书，意思是，请读者把前面的内容和这本书里的内容作比较、作为补充等。
e.g. For the more salient remarks on the matter, cf. Isis Unveiled, Vol. I.

viz. (Latin: videre licet)
字面意思是"it is permitted to see"，通常指"namely", "that is to say", "which is"等等，主要用来对前面的内容补充细节。
e.g. We both shared the same ambition, viz., to make a lot of money and to retire at 40.
viz.前面是the same ambition，后面是to make money，这就体现了一个补充细节的关系。

注意viz.不要和scilicet (/ˈskiːlɪkɛt/)混淆。scilicet的字面意思是"it is permitted to know"，和viz.类似，但是用法有区别。虽然都是”补充“，但是viz.强调补充细节，而scilicet强调澄清、避免误会、补上之前缺失的内容。scilicet在一些法律文书中也会简写成s.s.
e.g. The journal cites the spot, scilicet present-day Provincetown, as the location of the Pilgrims' first landfall.
这里的scilicet就是为了点明白这个spot到底是什么，而不是为了补充细节。
