[The arrests will] continue to chill the media environment in the city following a difficult year for the city’s news outlets.

Steven Butler:[It was] an open assault on Hong Kong’s already tattered press freedom as China steps up direct control over the former colony.
Assault: 打擊
Tattered:

I stand by my fellow bad apples and black sheep and so-called evil elements with deep admiration for their courage and commitment. Journalism is not a crime, but in Hong Kong the Chinese regime is turning it into one.(我支持這些所謂害群之馬和邪惡勢力的同業,對他們深表敬意,並欣賞他們的勇敢和承擔。

Ben回顧當局點樣搞港台:the defenestration of Radio Television Hong Kong, turning the respected public service broadcaster into a local version of China’s CCTV or CGTN, canning provocative programmes, culling investigative reporting, axing political discussion shows and reshaping it into a propaganda outlet for the regime
Cull: 剔除
Axe:
Propaganda outlet for the regime:

Ben

First, it must condemn loudly, clearly and repeatedly the attack on Stand News, the arrest of the seven individuals, and the assault on press freedom in Hong Kong.

Second, democracies must coordinate an effort to demand the release of the seven who were arrested….Governments, journalists, lawyers, artists and organisations that represent them must speak out for Margaret Ng, Denise Ho and the Stand News Journalists in the same way that tennis stars united in outcry at the disappearance of Peng Shuai. And we must not stop demanding their release until they are free.

This is not a regime that respects statements alone, although we must continue to speak out. But it is a regime that only understands the language of strength and action. So democracies, if we still believe in press freedom and other basic human rights, must unite and coordinate robust, targeted sanctions to make it clear that the assault on Hong Kong is unacceptable.

2022-01-05 08:01:02 Police said in a statement that they were conducting a search with a warrant authorizing them "to search and seize relevant journalistic materials." Stand News posted a video on Facebook of police officers saying they had a warrant to investigate the "conspiracy to publish a publication of seditious publications."
warrant(名詞):搜查令
authorize(動詞):批准
seize(動詞):查獲,奪取
relevant(形容詞):相關的

A 'dangerous precedent'
Eric Lai, Hong Kong law fellow at Georgetown University's Center for Asian Law, told DW that the arrests were a "dangerous precedent" as the government can arrest people "retroactively." "The charge of seditious publication was also used to charge the unionists who published the children's book a few months ago," Lai said, referring to five people being detained in July for publishing a book called "Defenders of the Sheep Village."
fellow(名詞):研究員
precedent(名詞):先例
retroactively(形容詞):https://t.me/TwitterEnglishDep/946
unionist(名詞):工會人員
refer(動詞):提到
detain(動詞):拘留
Defenders of the Sheep Village:羊村守衛者 https://t.me/TwitterEnglishDep/939

"It was quite disturbing because seditious law in Hong Kong is a kind of speech crime that the government can use whenever it needs once they interpret any expression or publications that are anti-government." Lai warned that charges of seditious publication would have an "unprecedented" and "chilling effect" throughout the city.
disturbing(形容詞):使人憂慮的
interpret(動詞):闡釋
chilling(形容詞):令人恐懼的,令人不寒而慄的

"It would force the newspapers in Hong Kong to decide if they still want to act independently and critically of the government," he added. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) described the raid as "an open assault on Hong Kong's already tattered press freedom" and called for charges to be dropped.
critically(副詞):批評地
Committee to Protect Journalists:
open(形容詞):公開的
assault(名詞):攻擊
tattered(形容詞):破爛的

A crackdown on dissent
This is not the first time Hong Kong police have conducted raids on journalists.

In June, hundreds of police raided the premises of the pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily. The paper's executives were arrested for "collusion with a foreign country." Hong Kong prosecutors filed an additional "seditious publications" charge against Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai on Tuesday.
premise(名詞):場所,場地
executive(名詞):行政人員
collusion(名詞):勾結,串謀
prosecutor(名詞):https://t.me/TwitterEnglishDep/1079

Hong Kong passed a controversial national security law in June of last year. Earlier this month, Hong Kong held a "patriots-only" legislative election, which critics said marginalized pro-democracy candidates.
controversial(形容詞):具爭議性的
patriot(名詞):愛國者
critic(名詞):批評者
marginalize(動詞):使邊緣化,忽視,排斥
candidate(名詞):候選人

台灣外交部形容今次係savage attacks on media outlets daring to report the news(向敢於報道新聞的媒體的野蠻攻擊)。UN Human Rights Office話We are witnessing an extremely rapid closing of the civil space and outlets for Hong Kong’s civil society to speak and express themselves freely。

Benedict Rogers: These arrests are nothing short of an all-out assault on the freedom of the press in #Hong Kong

A confident government that is unafraid of the truth embraces a free press(一個有信心的政府,應該無懼真相,接受自由的媒體)

Rep. Mark Green: This is the name of the game for communists – silencing dissent
Game
Silencing dissent:

Matthew Brooker: Mission accomplished in the latest phase of the authoritarian erasure of Hong Kong’s freedoms and civil society(極權政權消除香港的自由和公民社會的最新一步,已經完成任務)
Mission accomplished

Tom Rogon (Washington Examiner, 29 December 2021): ... Stand News and other Hong Kong publications such as the Apple Daily newspaper have been so aggressively targeted. Not because they are plotting seditious terrorism, but because they dare to say things that do not align with Big Brother Xi Jinping’s vision.

Kenneth Roth: To justify shutting Stand News, John Lee, Hong Kong’s No. 2 official, said “journalism could not be used as a screen for endangering national security.” Translation: Journalism cannot be used to document repression in China or the crackdown in Hong Kong.
