这个词用来指极其好的运气，非常美好的祝福等等。这个词是积极、自然的表扬，现在看来没有讽刺的含义。
但是这个词不是来自爱尔兰，也不是英格兰、苏格兰，而是美利坚。1845-1852年，爱尔兰遭受大饥荒，很多幸存人背井离乡，来到北美洲。而1848-1855年恰好是加利福尼亚淘金潮，也就是说，那个时期的爱尔兰人恰好躲开了饥荒，赶上了淘金潮——这是无比幸运的事情。而且，在淘金潮时期，成功的人多是爱尔兰裔。当然，在历史上，爱尔兰可能算是多灾多难的国家。
这个词在最开始也稍微有一些“吃不到葡萄说葡萄酸”的感觉，有一种“一个爱尔兰人可以因为好运成功，而不是才智”的心理在其中。
